Our Mission

To educate, train, coach, and mentor ladies with a focus on building skills that contribute to leadership development, civic engagement, and social responsibility. Our primary focus is to grow and expand the capacity of women leaders to contribute to improved community life.

Our Vision

With a vision to expand the leadership capacity of women in preparation for service to the global marketplace of the future, Roberta Baines Wheeler Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Group’s mentorship program: Dr. Katherine Y. Brown Leadership Academy is on a positive trajectory making an impact in the Nashville community and abroad.

Specifically, the program builds measurable skills in the areas of:

  • ​Understanding and demonstrating key leadership character traits
  • Understanding and demonstrating effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Understanding and demonstrating a commitment to academic achievement and lifelong learning
  • Understanding and demonstrating involvement in service and giving back to the community to improve the well-being of all
  • Understanding and demonstrating the ability to manage difficult situations to produce positive outcomes
  • Understanding and demonstrating how to be a contributor within the framework of a team environment
  • Understanding and demonstrating how to contribute to and facilitate an inclusive culture within an environment

Goals:

Through the presentation of four distinct modules the primary goal is to provide education, training, coaching, and mentoring for ladies to develop measurable skills in the key areas that universally define effective leadership:

  • Key leadership character traits
  • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Commitment to academic achievement and lifelong learning
  • Involvement in service and giving back to the community to improve the well-being of all
  • Ability to manage difficult situations to produce positive outcomes
  • ​Contributor within the framework of a team environment
  • Contribute to and facilitate an inclusive culture within an environment

Outcomes:

At the conclusion of each session, participants in the program can articulate and demonstrate competencies in each key area of leadership development, including:

  • ​Understanding and demonstrating key leadership character traits
  • Self-assess their personal reputation and leadership identity
  • Be able to identify critical leadership traits
  • Create a development plan focused on areas identified as opportunities for improvement (leadership traits)
  • Understanding and demonstrating effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Identify types of communication (verbal, written, interpersonal) and key competency skills
  • ​An assessment instrument to determine interpersonal communication style
  • ​Create a development plan focused on areas effective techniques for interactions with multiple communication types
  • Understanding and demonstrating a commitment to academic achievement and lifelong learning
  • Identify current academic goals and future education goals
  • Assigned mentor and mentee roles
  • Create a development plan for a career interest shadow experience
  • Understanding and demonstrating involvement in service and giving back to the community to improve the well-being of all
  • Identify a community service project for planning and delivery
  • Assess and select from community invitations for service learning opportunities
  • Document and identify the benefits of each community service experience
  • Understanding and demonstrating the ability to manage difficult situations to produce positive outcomes
  • ​Identify types and causes of conflict in situations across multiple areas of their lives
  • Assess their conflict management and conflict resolution styles
  • Create a development plan to address common challenges that arise with positive resolutions
  • Understanding and demonstrating how to be a contributor within the framework of a team environment
  • Identify the make-up and function of a team
  • Assess interpersonal skills and how these skills influence interactions with others
  • Create a development plan to build personal teamwork skills
